Inger Haukenes was educated in physiotherapy at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (1983). After internship and work in the Northern part of Norway she returned to Bergen in 1985. Haukenes has experience with rehabilitation of elderly people, disabled children, occupational health services and occupational medicine.
She has a master degree in Philosophy from the University of Bergen (2004), and defended her PhD thesis «Predictors of disability pension, the role of class, work and gender» in 2013.
After studying pain rehabilitation for one year at Umeå University in Sweden, she received a post doctor grant from the Norwegian Research Council for addressing mechanisms of gender differences in sickness absence and disability pension.
Currently she holds a 50% position as senior researcher and 50% post doctor.
Her research interests include marginalisation from working life, factors that influence inequality and inequity in sickness absence and disability pension, and the relation between primary health care, the patient and working life.
